ELECTIONS

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS

The Local Government elections planned originally for May, 2000 and destined to be the first in the series of general elections had suffered series of postponement so as to be allowed to take place in a relatively less contentious and politically charged environment in order to pave way for a good chance at a smooth transition in 2003.
Meanwhile, 2003 was gradually drifting to an end and the elections were still waiting. This time, it was on grounds of the want of a reform for third tier of government for non performance and financial indiscipline.

The Committee was appointed by the Federal Government to look into the Local Government system in Nigeria with a view to recommending necessary and appropriate amendments capable of valganizing the system. This committee, had just submitted its reports to the President for onward presentation to the Council of States - the initiator of the Committee. Judging from available antecedents, the elections may be put on hold beyond December, 2003.

It is worthy of note however that ODIEC in anticipation that the various dates fixed for the elections would be feasible, had completed all necessary arrangement for the elections. As at the moment, ballot boxes and papers, and other electoral materials including the production of copies of the voters' register and logistics, to a great extent are on ground.

The only area left for consideration perhaps is the screening of candidates and the training of adhoc staff which may not be possible until political parties send their lists, the date of the election fixed, fund released by government and the right signal received from FOSIECON
