CREATION OF ADDITIONAL THIRTY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
The commission, shortly after its maiden inauguration embarked upon the constitutional process of creation of additional local governments to increase the number from the original twenty local government councils to thirty seven.
A referendum was conducted pursuant to section 8 (3) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 on Tuesday; 21st May, 2002. Being the first public assignment, a lot of grassroot campaigns and awareness programme were engaged to mass-mobilize the citizenry and a resultant over-whelming turn-out was recorded in all the twenty local government councils.

>>LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS 2004.<<
On the 27th March 2004, the Commission conducted its first ever-local government elections into the Chairmanship and Councillorships offices in the newly created 57 local government areas. It was described by observes as peaceful, credible, free and fair. There was no record of violence or shortage of electoral materials; electoral personnel and security operatives were sufficiently subscribed. The creation of additional Local Governments was contested in court. The court apart from holding that the process was legal, acknowledged that the procedure was thorough, thus legitimizing the newly created local governments in the state.

COMMISSION MEET ELECTORAL OFFICERS, STAFF
Members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), recently met with members of staff of the Commission and Electoral Officers posted to the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state in preparation towards the forthcoming Local government Elections in the state.
The meeting which was presided over by the State Commission Chairman, Hon. Justice Fatai Afolabi Adeyinka (Rtd) deliberated on issues affecting the Commission with a view to conducting a free and fair Local Government Elections in the State.
While appealing to staff to be loyal and dedicate themselves to the course of the Commission he promised them improved welfare packages which including regular trainings. The Chairman Hon. Justice Fatai Adeyinka (Rtd), also took time out to inspect facilities on ground at the Headquarters of the Commission in order to ascertain the qualities of electoral materials and logistics in preparation for the forthcoming Local Government Elections in Lagos State.
In course of the inpections the Chairman said LASIEC is leaving no stone unturned in order to ensure a free and fair Local Government Election in the State. According to the Chairman,
It has mapped out strategies to put in place, a serious Public enlightenment programme in order to educate the general public, particularly the stack holders about the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
Plans are also on the way towards making a working visit to the Stake holders in each of the Local Government areas of the State;
Arrangement has also been concluded for Logistics, Electoral Education Programmes and review of Election materials with a view to achieving success in the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
