HISTORAICAL
BACKGROUND AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMMISSION
The
Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), was set up
on 24th March, 2000 by the Edo State Government Electoral Law in
accordance with the provision of the 1999 Constitution of Federal
Republic of Nigeria.
The
Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) was established
on the 24th March, 2000 and members of the Commission were sworn
in by His Excellency, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, the Executive
Governor of Edo State on the 24th March, 2000. During the swearing
in ceremony, members were charged with the conduct of free and fair
Local Government Elections in the State. Members of the Commission
who are on full-time appointment meet from time to time to deliberate
on matters affecting the Commission and take decisions aimed at
ensuring free and fair Local Government Elections in the State.
As the Chairman of the Commission, it is my desire to ensure that
a democratic structure is put in place at the grassroots in order
to accelerate the pace of socio-economic transformation in the rural
areas and make for sustainable development in the State in particular
and the country in general. In doing this, efficiency in the allocation
and utilization of the scarce resources at the disposal of the Commission,
is our watchword.
