» HISTORAICAL BACKGROUND AND ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMMISSION

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission was created by the provision of Section 197 Sub-section 1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

On inauguration by the then Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion on the 24th March, 2000, the Commission had its pioneer members as follows:

The Commission carried out its first statutory functions by successfully conducting the Local Government Elections in Edo State on the 27th of March, 2004. The elected Council Officials has also successfully completed their tenure. With the expiration of the tenure of the first set of members of the Commission in June 2005, a new set of members were appointed and inaugurated by the then Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion on 12th July, 2005. This set of members were removed from office by a resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly on 19th July, 2007 accented to by the Executive Governor, His Excellency, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor.

Consequent upon the dissolution of the Commission new members were appointed and inaugurated by the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Senator Oserheimen Osunbor on 20th June, 2007. The members of the new Commission are currently serving as Commissoners in the Commission

»OBJECTIVE OF THE EDO STATE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION.

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission was set up by the State Government with the following objectives:-
i.    To conduct free and fair local Government Elections in the State;
ii.   To assist the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) in the compilation of Voters' Register in the State;
iii.  To conduct By-Election into any of the Elective Offices that may become vacant in the Local Government Councils;
iv.  To undertake the prosecution of cases that may arise from the conduct of Electins at the Election Tribunals; and
v.   To undertake the screening of political aspirants vying for elective posts in the Local Government Council Elections.

However, the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission started as a mustard seed in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government By July, 2001, it moved to its present office complex located at Plot 116, Oko-Ogba Road, Benin City. The Commission's Office Complex has a Conference Hall capable of accommodating five hundred (500) guests at a time. It has Offices for the Chairman, Six Commissioners, Administrative Secretary and Heads of Department as well as a store for safe-keeping of Sensitive and non-sensitive Electoral Materials. There are convinience facilities with water supplied from the bore-hole sunk in the premises. It has enough space for car park for both staff and visitors. The Office is well furnished with Air Conditioners and Computer systems.

» MISSION STATEMENT

To conduct a credible and generally acceptable Local Government Elections effectively with high sense of integrity that all stakeholders are justifiably proud to be associated with the Commission.
