EBONYI STATE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION
PRESS RELEASE BY THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE FORUM OF STATE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONS OF NIGERIA (FOSIECON) ON THE CONDUCT OF ELECTIONS INTO THE’ LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCILS OF. EBONY! STATE HELD ON 20th October, 2007.

On behalf of the Forum of State’ Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) I make the following statements:

(i) That the Forum heartily congratulates the Chairman, members and Staff of Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for      conducting successful Local Government Elections in consonance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

(ii) The Forum highly appreciates the tremendous support given to Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for the discharge of      her cardinal constitutional responsibility by the Governor, the government and the people of Ebonyi State.

(iii) That in the tradition of FOSIECON the Chairmen and Members of other State Independent Electoral Commissions in all the geo-political zones       of Nigeria showed solidarity with Ebonyi SIEC by observing the conduct of the Chairmanship and Councillorship Elections in all the Senatorial       Districts of Ebonyi State on 20th October, 2007.

(iv) That from our observations, the election proceedings in almost all the polling stations and the collation centers were orderly, violence-free and       exciting.

(v) That we observed the enthusiasm in the electorate to enthrone democratically elected councils in Ebonyi State.

(vi) That the success of the elections is as a result of good election planning and execution by Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission.

(vii) That Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission has further set the pace for other State Independent Electoral Commissions to emulate.

(viii) While we commend the 35 political parties in Ebonyi State that participated in the elections, we urge them to accept the result of the elections in        the spirit of sportsmanship and by so doing enhance the growth of democracy in Nigeria.
