Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission

ACTIVITIES
AT AKISIEC
The
Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) was inaugurated
by the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong (Arc) Victor
Attah on 2nd January 2001. The Commission has a Chairman, Six members
and a Secretary.
The
Chairman is the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the State and the
Chief Executive Officer of the Commission.
The
Commission has six functional departments including Administration
and Personnel; Field Services and Logistics; Finance and Supplies;
Legal and Public Affairs; Planning, Research and Statistics; and,
Works and Estates. The Electoral Commissioners are assigned functions
to assist the Commission in the running of its affairs.
There
are 242 permanent staff of the Commission. They are deployed at
the Commission's Headquarters and the Local Government Offices.
On
July 28th, 2001, AKISIEC conducted a bye-election to fill vacant
councillorship positions in seven wards in Six Local Government
Areas of the State. The Bye-Election was very peaceful, free and
fair. Benue SIEC members observed the Bye-Election.
In
October, 2001, AKISIEC undertook a tour of the Local Government
Areas in the State. The exercise took members of the Commission
to the 31 Local Government Areas of the State. During the exercise,
members of the registered Political Parties, Local Government Legislative
Council members, Traditional Fathers and Voters were enlightened
and sensitized on the Commission's activities, plans and programmes.
The
Commission has established functional Local Government Area offices
throughout the state, and has appointed Electoral Officers and other
supporting staff to man them. For administrative convenience, the
thirty–one Local Government Areas are grouped into six zones,
each zone comprising at least five Local Government Areas. An Electoral
Commissioner supervises the election activities in each zone and
is responsible to the Executive Chairman.
AKISIEC
is an effective member of FOSIECON. The Commission members attended
the five day workshop organized by International Foundation of Elections
System (IFES) for State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECS)
in South South zone at Port Harcourt, Rivers State from 10th to
14th June, 2002.
Also
AKISIEC attended INEC post election 2003 Seminar at Kaduna from
28th to 30th July, 2003.
