A Message
from the Chairman
The
establishment of State Independent Electoral Commission is the first
of its kind in Akwa Ibom State. Its functions are spelt out in the
Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as the law
establishing the Commission; that is, the Akwa Ibom State Independent
Electoral Commission Law 2000. Specifically the functions of the
Commission include to organize, undertake and supervise all elections
to local government councils within Akwa Ibom State. Thus, the Commission
is saddled with the responsibility of laying a foundation at the
grass root for democracy.
The
Commission, as it is presently constituted, is made up of persons
of high integrity and good records in the public administration.
The goals of the Commission have been to organize free, fair and
credible local government elections and also, to put in place a
framework for good elections management that will be difficult to
supercede by succeeding members of the Commission.
The
journey so far has clearly shown commendable progress towards the
achievement of these goals.
Otuekong
Sunday E. U. Ekanem
